DeepBlue was founded by Dr. James R. Rivet.
As an educator, consultant, researcher, and founder of Study Smart La Jolla and DeepBlue Consultants, Dr. Rivet brings a calm, steady presence to the often chaotic world of academic and emotional development. With a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction and a doctoral degree in Education from the University of Southern California (U.S.C.), his work is grounded in both deep knowledge and compassionate care.
An adjunct professor teaching graduate courses in Education, Dr. Rivet has also taught grades K–12 in the San Diego Unified School District. He serves on multiple advisory committees and is a frequent speaker on educational innovation at conferences across the country. His presentations—like his philosophy—center around creating individualized learning paths that foster both achievement and emotional well-being.
The heart of his work is guided by the belief that calm structure creates the best conditions for growth. He is especially passionate about supporting families and organizations navigating the ever-evolving challenges of helping children realize their full potential. Whether in a classroom or a living room, he approaches each child not just as a student, but as a whole person in need of understanding, rhythm, and encouragement.
Dr. Rivet’s extensive experience and warm, holistic approach make him uniquely suited to provide in-home consulting for families of children ages Birth to 20, offering not only academic insight, but also the calm clarity that empowers families to thrive together.

When he’s not guiding families from chaos to calm, James enjoys time with his own family, swimming at La Jolla Cove, playing pickleball, sailing, traveling, reading and writing.
